The Joshua Breakstone Trio No One New CD Review

Beyond the level of a blowing session. The music is front and center and the trio’s collective creativity is allowed to shine.

The tunes that Breakstone has chosen for the album are a nice mix of original compositions and contrafacts, with a couple standards thrown in for good measure. For those unfamiliar with the term contrafact, or its role in jazz music, it describes a composition that uses standard chord changes with a new melody written over them. A good example of this is Breakstone’s tune “For Me,” which features an original melodic line written over the chord changes to John Coltrane’s jazz classic “Giant Steps.”

Breakstone has chosen to close the album with the Joe Henderson tune “The Kicker,” which is not necessarily a “songbook standard,” but a tune that has worked its way into the standard jazz repertoire none-the-less. Played with a reverence for the composer, and the ’60s Blue Note style in which it was originally written, Breakstone and company insert enough personality into the piece to avoid it being an imitation, but not too much that it will still appeal to fans of Henderson and the Blue Note genre.
