The Urban Jazz
Guerrillas are a modern jazz fusion outfit based in Leeds. They play “jazz with
attitude” combining the sounds of classic 70's fusion from the likes of Billy
Cobham, Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis with more modern rhythmic elements such
as Drum and Bass, Dance and Dub. All are stylish, experienced musicians and put
on an entertaining live show that appeals to a wide range of audiences. Having
performed extensively around the Leeds area the Jazz Guerrillas are looking
forward to extending their activities nationwide.
Formed in the year 2000 around guitarist Graham Young the UJG quickly
built up a good live reputation around their home town of Leeds. Early performances
were characterised by spontaneously improvised tunes and an irrepressible groove. The
band proved to have a wide ranging appeal despite playing "difficult"
music
As the band evolved as an entity more original compositions crept
into the set giving more light, shade and character to the band.
June 2002 saw www.urbanjazzguerrillas.com going
online with the mission of exposing the wider world to the music of the Urban
Jazz Guerrillas. In 2003 disatisfied with the current line up Graham recruited
a new rhythm section in the form of Martin Davies and Scott Devine. No longer
restricted by technical constraints Graham was able to start writing and performing
the sort of music he'd had in his head for a while. This new style was dubbed
Heavy Fusion . August 2003 saw the UJG spending three days at Purple Studios
laying rhythm tracks for the long awaited album.
